Enhancing Accuracy and Efficiency in Warehouse Picking
Accurate picking in busy distribution centres is essential.
Errors can be costly and slow down the entire supply chain. In comes a fully immersive training program using virtual reality, gamified practice, and an AI assistant. Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) implemented this solution and, as a result, has achieved faster onboarding, increased employee engagement, and improved picking accuracyโensuring well-stocked store shelves and satisfied customers across Canada.
The Challenge
Maintaining high accuracy and efficiency in warehouse picking is vital for any large-scale retailer. Mistakes in picking can lead to misplaced inventory, delayed shipments, and dissatisfied customers. For companies with thousands of products moving daily through multiple distribution centres, even small errors add up quickly.
Welcoming new warehouse staff presents an exciting opportunity to foster fresh talent and perspectives. While many new hires may have limited experience, this new technology encourages rapid learning and growth. Traditional training programs, though sometimes time-intensive, lay a solid foundation; however, there is great potential to further enhance consistency and elevate standards of accuracy and productivity across the entire team.
The Solution
To address these challenges, Motive created a fully immersive training program, combining virtual reality (VR), gamification, and artificial intelligence (AI). The goal was to create a realistic, engaging, and repeatable training environment where new and existing employees could build confidence and competence before stepping onto the warehouse floor.

The program has four core elements:
- Teach Mode: This guided VR experience breaks down every task a warehouse picker must master. Trainees learn how to read product and location labels, navigate aisles efficiently, and operate voice-directed picking tools through clear, step-by-step instructions.
- Practice Mode: Once trainees complete Teach Mode, they enter a free-roam simulation that mirrors real picking scenarios. Here, they practice picking items with randomly assigned products and quantities while dealing with everyday challenges like blocked aisles or unexpected noise, building resilience and reinforcing correct processes.
- Web-Based Mini-Game: Outside of VR, trainees can practice their label-reading speed and accuracy with a timed mini-game. Score tracking motivates employees to compete and improve their skills, driving better knowledge retention.
- AI Assistant: Embedded directly into the training ecosystem, we created Sandy, an AI-powered helper that trainees can consult anytime. Whether they need a policy explanation, a refresher on a picking step, or best practice advice, the assistant provides immediate, context-specific answers drawn from up-to-date training manuals and operational guidelines.

Together, these components deliver a flexible, engaging training solution that shortens learning curves and ensures critical knowledge is always at employeesโ fingertips. All modules have also been translated into four languages, allowing non-native English speakers to become more comfortable with the content before being placed on the warehouse floor.
The Results
This innovative training program is already proving its value in real operations. Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC), one of Canadaโs leading retailers, has implemented this system in its distribution centres to improve training speed and picking accuracy. By integrating VR, gamification, and AI into a single solution, Canadian Tire is setting a new benchmark for warehouse efficiency and employee readinessโkeeping shelves stocked and customers happy nationwide.
